The Information Technology Service department’s primary responsibilities are in the areas of providing information technology, developing and implementing recommended standards for information technology, developing and maintaining security policies and systems and coordinating the acquisition of information technology by city departments.
Our goal is to provide the best data processing services to the city through the effective utilization of existing and new information technology. ITS will implement and support technologies and processes that will increase service to city employees and enhance staff productivity.

Information Technology Services Department provides information across the various departments and agencies of Huntsville City Government, to ensure that accurate and timely information is provided to citizens, elected officials, management and staff.
Operations Support:
Manages daily computer operations as well as Cable and Fiber Franchises, the city’s government television channel (Channel 42), public and educational access programming, interconnect and telecommunications administration and city telephone support.

Software Systems:
Provides computer application support to all users in development of new computer related systems/programs. Provides computer related training, database management, and batch job execution. Selection and installation of PC software, office automation support, and mainframe/PC interface support to all City Departments. Identify, direct, and manage high-priority information management and information technology projects. Advise the ITS Director on the implementation of information technology solutions to achieve management efficiencies in operation processes. Assist City Departments in using information technology to improve organizational performance. Represent Director in senior management meetings and interdepartmental working groups. Monitor and make departmental recommendations on industry trends in information technology solutions and information management improvement initiatives.

Technical Support:
Design, install, configure and resolve problems in operating systems, network communications (voice and Data) systems, network software and hardware. Provide a stable computing environment for all users by monitoring and managing a system resources to include networks, network servers and mainframe computer. Provide installation and maintenance for computer network and telephone equipment. Provide assistance to users in city departments.

Telecom Support:
Manages design and engineering specifications for client telecommunications network, including analog and digital, microwave radio, fiber optic systems, leased circuits, two-way radio (both conventional and trunked), voice networks and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Works with users to research and recommend telecommunications options. Development of short term and long term plans to meet client telecommunication needs. The installation, and maintenance of data and voice physical network devices (telephones, Ethernet, PCs, printers) and 800 HMz systems.

Web Development
Analyze, design, program, test and implement new software and computerized systems with world wide web (internet/intranet) technology and maintain existing systems. ITS believes that the world wide web is today's government media of choice. We develop web applications that provide convenient municipal services to our citizens, and at the same time create efficiencies within the city departments.

Implement enterprise initiatives that provide e-government information and services 24 hours a day, seven days a week for city customers.
Maintain an IT infrastructure that supports enterprise technology solutions, facilitates interoperability and connectivity, achieves consistently high service level and supports research and development efforts within the enterprise.
Establish an IT management and coordination structure to achieve an enterprise approach to managing IT within our city government.
Enhance our customer-driven culture to ensure city department IT needs are well defined and consistently met.
Effectively manage city data and ensure that it is utilized in decision-making.
Establish a mechanism to share and or purchase IT components, practices or processes with others city government entities.
Attract, retain, reward and retrain high performing IT professionals.
