The Landscape Management Division's goal is to improve standards of grounds care on all public space within the City of Huntsville. Landscape Management maintains the grounds in city parks, sports facilities, and rights-of-way, while promoting the highest quality of trained technicians and professionals in the fields of Turf Management, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Irrigation, Litter Management and Herbicide Application.

Urban Forestry and Horticulture
This division manages the public trees within the city as well as installing landscape plantings on public properties. Work involves taking a project from design through the installation phase and into the routine maintenance of the planting. Quite a number of seasonal plantings are changed out and managed annually by the Forestry/Horticulture staff along with managing two contract aerial tree crews. The division administers the city's tree ordinance and guides the Tree Commission in its activities. Public education on the selection, planting and care of trees can be requested from this division. The division regularly cooperates with Huntsville Utilities in programs such as the replacement of street trees removed for power line clearance.

Downtown - Sparkle Team
This division maintains the overall appearance of downtown Huntsville. They are engaged in litter management, landscape installations and maintenance, seasonal color installations and other tasks in the central city area. The division works with Forestry/Horticulture in changing out and managing seasonal color in a number of downtown locations. It also assists with events such as Panoply, Big Spring Jam and other downtown activities.

Lawn Care Contracts
Properties under the care of lawn maintenance contractors are serviced either on a weekly or by-weekly basis during the growing season. Work includes weed control and fertilization, litter removal, mowing, edging and trimming. Currently three lawn care firms are under contract with the city in providing this care of public space including greenways. These contracts are administered by the Contracts and Irrigation Coordinator who inspects properties for compliance to performance specifications on a weekly basis.

Parks Maintenance
This division is responsible for the grounds care of public parks and the support of nature preserve activities. Work involves daily litter management and weekly mowing trimming and weed control of all parks throughout the city. The division supports special events such a Panoply and the Big Spring Jam and provides some support to tournaments where needed. Work also involves improved turf management practices for general park areas throughout the city.

Research Park/State Row Maintenance
Grounds care of all commons areas and rights-of-way within Research Park including Old Madison Pike and all State Row (I-565, Parkway, Governors Dr., Research Park Blvd., Hwy. 72) is the responsibility of this section. Work involves turf management, irrigation systems management, mulch bed maintenance, tree and shrub care, fertilization, and herbicide and pesticide applications, with the goal of improving the aesthetic quality of the second largest research park in the country.

North Maintenance
This division includes the maintenance of State Routes, I-565 roadside maintenance for landscaped areas and the roadside maintenance of high traffic count city streets (Roadside Pride), low traffic count streets (Rough Cut) and ditch maintenance for North Huntsville. Work includes litter management, mowing, trimming, curb dressing and the over seeding of certain roadsides. Herbicides are used to control weeds on certain roadsides and to control vegetative growth in crack joints and curb and gutters.

South Maintenance

Sports Facilities
This section manages the grounds care of all public sports facilities under the city's control. Work sites include all football, softball, baseball and soccer fields and encompass such tasks as turf management, mowing, fertilization, herbicide applications, aeration, irrigation systems maintenance, layout and daily field lining and preparation for sporting events. In addition to the coordination of field schedules with the Recreation Services Division and youth athletic leagues, this section work with the Huntsville Sports Commission in producing quality tournaments.
