  • Signs

The sign crew and sign shop fabricates most of the signs on Huntsville streets. stop signAmong the signs manufactured are regulatory, warning, guide, information, school zone signs, and street name markers. Approximately 5,000 signs are fabricated each year. Following sign fabrication, the signs are installed on the streets of Huntsville. We install 3,500 new signs each year. The crews also trim shrubbery and tree limbs which obstruct the view of traffic signs and signals. Reflectivity tests are also performed during daylight and evening hours to determine if signs need to be replaced due to fading. A member of the sign crew is required to be on call for emergency repairs which occur after-hours. To report a missing, damaged, or faded sign, call Traffic Operations at (256) 427-6850.

    Signals

The City of Huntsville signal system consists of 310 signalized intersections. Maintenance is a major factor for ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians as well asgreen signalefficiency in travel. The traffic signal technicians are responsible for the installation, operation, and repair of the traffic signals and their associated electronic equipment. Each yearthe City replaces approximately 1500 bulbs which burn out during operation. The traffic signal crews are also responsible for all overhead street name markers and signage. Other duties include maintaining a database of equipment repairs, maintaining an inventory of spare parts and equipment, and determining the future operating needs in the area of equipment and supplies.Traffic signal malfunctions or questions concerning timings may be reported to (256) 427-6850.

    Markings

The Traffic Operations Department installs and maintains pavement markings such as stop bars, white skip lines, yellow striping, turn arrows, raised pavement markers (reflectors),raised pavement markerschool zones, railroad crossing markings, and pedestrian crosswalks. The pavement markings crews apply approximately 500,000 linear feet of striping per year, 100 turn arrows, and 3,000 raised pavement markers.Striping and raised pavement marking decisions are based on inspections during the day and evening hours to determine the visibility and reflectivity of such markings. To report a problem with striping, call (256) 427-6850.
