Why am I seeing GREEN?

The City of Huntsville's website, www.hsvcity.com, has been turned green today in recognition of the first ever Huntsville Green Cities™ Summit. The Huntsville Green Cities™ Summit is a vision planning session to determine the imperatives to creating an educational event that will help lay the path of sustainable development for jobs, housing, community, and business growth in Huntsville over the next 5 years. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle will also formally introduce the members of his Council for Green Sustainability to the conference participants. More than 200 experts in the field of green sustainability are expected to attend.

Speaking at today's Huntsville Green Cities™ Summit will be:
Mike Italiano is President & Chief Executive Officer for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) and Capital Markets Partnership. He founded the Capital Markets Partnership, MTS, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Leadership Council, and American Society of Testing & Materials (ASTM) Committee E50 on Environmental Assessment. He is a Director of MTS, USGBC, USGBC CEO Board, Sustainable Furniture Council, and former Director of ASTM and Chairman of ASTM E50. Mike has been responsible at over 200 waste sites for expert testimony, litigation, cleanup, settlement, and scientific and technical analysis.

He published over 50 articles in the environmental field and authored four environmental books. He has over 35 years of environmental experience including as Senior Analyst in the White House Science Office and Assistant to the Director, National Commission on Water Quality where he helped write the Congressional Report on the Clean Water Act.

Steve Cochran is an internationally-recognized and nationally-prominent leader, speaker, writer, and advocate and practitioner in the field of sustainable enterprise, working with private industry, government, academia and the non-profit world to achieve that goal. He is the co-founder of National Center for Sustainability and Sustainability Strategies, LLC: an Asheville NC-based strategic planning and management consulting firm helping cross-sector clients transform and evolve themselves as sustainable enterprise. He works with a highly-diverse client base locally, nationally and internationally.

Steve serves as Chairman of the Board of the Washington DC-based United States Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development, with more than three hundred multi-stakeholder and cross-sector partner organizations. The US Partnership is the national response to the United Nations 'Decade of Education for Sustainable Development' (2005-2014). He served as a 'sustainable development policy' delegate in 2006 to both the "G8 Civil Summit" in Moscow, and the United Nations "Global Civil Society Forum" in Dubai.

Brandi Clark is a social entrepreneur and recognized community leader who focuses her energy on connecting people, information and resources in the promotion of sustainability. She is a master at connecting people, projects, information and resources. In the last 15 years Brandi has launched more than a dozen social venture enterprises and green events. She is a founder and active leader in The AustinEcoNetwork, a socially and environmentally responsible bank, Austin Car Share, and The Austin Sustainable Business Council.

Brandi served as co-chair of the Austin Sustainable Business Council and chair of the Urban Forestry Board. She serves on task forces for the City of Austin including the Heat Island Mitigation Task Force and City of Austin Climate Protection Plan. She is the founding member of the newly established Austin/Travis County Sustainable Food Policy Board. Voted "Best Environmentalist" in the Austin Chronicle's Best of Austin 2007 and 2008 Reader's Polls.

Cole Walker is a Partner in United Properties, a company that develops, owns and manages medical and professional offices as well as retail centers. He has a Master's of Science in Instructional Technology from Georgia State University and Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama. His philanthropic work and awards while residing in Atlanta included the founding of Atlanta New Century School, Volunteer of the Year, Legend of Fairlie Poplar, Rising Star of Atlanta, and Dossier magazine's Atlanta Hall of Fame, plus named a mover and shaker in the field of education. After relocating to Huntsville, Mr. Walker has been instrumental in the founding of the North Alabama Chapter of the USGBC and currently serves as Treasurer. He was recently named to the Huntsville Mayor's Task Force for Sustainability Planning.

Jerry Cargile is a registered professional engineer in AL, TN, and GA, and a LEED Accredited Professional. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama. He has been a partner in private engineering practice since 1995 when he was State Young Engineer of the Year for the Alabama Society of Professional Engineers. His design focus is on innovative approaches to low impact development and sustainable site design solutions. His project experience includes the site design for Raytheon's local corporate headquarters, a LEED Silver Certified facility, the first in Cummings Research Park, and Catalyst MRP West, a LEED Gold pre-certified office complex in the City of Madison. A married father of three young boys, his personal mission is to leave them with a more sustainable future.

Sam Ruark serves Program Director for Seven Star Events where he develops curriculum, recruits speakers, and implements programming for Green Cities™. He has provided program development, management, and implementation for over 100 green events. He is a former Sustainability Planner for the County of Marin, CA, where he created and implemented sustainability polices and programs (APA award winning), assisted in the writing of the Marin Countywide Plan, facilitated the Marin Energy Management Team, organized events, gave presentations and served on two boards. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, a NARI Certified Green Builder, and a Certified Permaculture Designer.

The Green 13 Council was commissioned on May 7th, 2009 at Huntsville City Hall Main Auditorium and for the next year will be working on developing an ambitious effort to put City Government on the Path to leave a legacy for future generations of Huntsville Citizens and Americans across the country.
