Huntsville wins venue for golf championship
Jr. College top players to spend week-long championship on Robert Trent Jones Course in Huntsville
Huntsville, Ala. --- Huntsville Sports Commission announced at a press conference held today that Huntsville will be the site of the Men's Division I National Championship Golf Tournament in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NCJAA) selected Huntsville for the event which is usually held in the mid-west. [More Details]

HEARTLAND joins Mayor Spencer and Operation Green Team to Kick-off the Great American Cleanup in Huntsville

HEARTLAND joined Mayor Spencer, Operation Green Team, Sprint and The Solid Waste Disposal Authority of Huntsville/Madison County to kick off Huntsville’s “Great American Cleanup” inspired by Lets Get Dirty, from the band’s CD I Loved Her First.
Huntsville, AL --- HEARTLAND joined Mayor Spencer and Operation Green Team to kick-off Keep America Beautiful's Great American Clean-up! Huntsville's efforts this year are inspired by one of Heartland's songs Let's Get Dirty from their CD "I Loved Her First".

Individuals and groups have the opportunity to tell Operation Green Team how they got dirty to clean-up and green-up Huntsville and be eligible to win $500 cash! Sewer Smoke Testing to be conducted this week
Huntsville, AL --- ADS Environmental Services will be performing sewer smoke testing during the next few days as part of their contract with the City of Huntsville's Water Pollution Control Department. For the initial work, field crews will be smoke testing a sewer trunk line that runs east of Highway 431 between Broad Armstrong Road and Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area. ADS has distributed door hangers to residences and businesses located near the testing area to notify them of these activities. [Full Story]

Cameras along busy city corridors will provide traffic information
Commuters able to check routes before travel
Huntsville, AL --- The City of Huntsville has installed the first of a network of cameras planned to be installed along heavily traveled roads in Huntsville. Commuters will be able to view traffic volumes by checking the city's website: www.hsvcity.com/traffic and clicking on "LIVE Traffic Cam!".

"This will be another way for residents to stay informed, up to the minute, concerning any traffic delays," Mayor Loretta Spencer stated. "We are fortunate to have so many projects in our city. There will be some delays during the construction, and we hope that this will become a useful tool for people traveling in those areas."[Full Story | View Traffic Cam]

First Phase of streetscape improvements completed
Next phase of project projected to begin this Fall
Huntsville, AL --- Progress on improving the streetscape for downtown can be seen on the Square's south western corner along the eastern portion of Madison Street. This is the first phase of the downtown streetscape improvement project. Renovations of existing streetscape on the east side of Madison Street from Southside Square to Constitution Hall Park have been completed. The renovations included a new sidewalk design construction, landscaping, irrigation, lighting and relocation of a traffic signal cabinet. The cost of the project was $113,891. [Full Story]

Kirk Paradise to present local study's findings at Radiological Dispersion Device and Nuclear Event Symposium
"Revitalizing the Fallout Shelter Program for 21st Century Threats"
Huntsville, AL --- As our nation again faces the potential threat of terrorists attacks employing Radiological Dispersion Devices (RDDs) or small nuclear weapons, the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies, government and emergency response agencies are addressing these two evolving threats and issues associated. During a three-day symposium in Richmond, VA officials and experts in fields of the radiological-device-user community, nuclear power industry and the detection, modeling, protection and health physics communities will present the most recent research and response strategies for such threats. Mayor Spencer recommends adding 29 acres to green space
Council to vote on purchase of property
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer will recommend to the City Council at their meeting tomorrow the purchase of 29 acres on Weatherly Mountain. "This piece of property is unique since residents of the neighborhoods have used this as a trail for decades," Mayor Spencer stated. "The purchase of this tract will allow the extension of the greenway and add to the green space available in Huntsville." [Full Story]

Huntsville Students win top awards in State Arbor Day Poster Art Contest Winners will visit Governor Riley at the State Capitol and plant a tree on the grounds
Huntsville, AL --- With balloons, cash, news of a pizza party, and a "round-trip ticket" to the State Capitol, Mayor Loretta Spencer and Joy McKee, director of Operation Green Team surprised two local elementary students at school on Thursday, February 15. The students were winners in the State Arbor Day Poster Art Contest, "Trees are terrific and forests are too!" Parker Mahan, a fifth grade student at Chapman Elementary, took top honors in the city and state contests. Kaitelen Campbell, a fifth grade student at Ridgecrest Elementary, placed third in the state contest. [Full Story]

Mayor Spencer Receives Notification from First Lady Laura Bush Huntsville is designated as a Preserve America Community
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer received official notification from First Lady Laura Bush that Huntsville has been recognized as a Preserve America Community. In her letter to Mayor Spencer Mrs. Bush stated: "The preservation and enjoyment of your historical and cultural resources celebrate an important part of our nation's heritage."

"Huntsville has a rich history that has played pivotal roles in the history of Alabama and our nation," Mayor Spencer stated. "Many cities' histories either began or ended after World War II, but our city's history has been significant consistently since 1805." [Full Story]

EPA Concurs with Huntsville's Self-Assessment on EPA's CMOM Program and Sewer Rehabilitation Efforts
City's proactive measures will continue
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer received notification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the completion of the required Self-Assessment on the city's sewer system is meeting the guidelines of EPA's Capacity, Management, Operation and Maintenance (CMOM) Program. The EPA recommended that the city continue the same proactive efforts that have been taken in the management of the sanitary sewer system and that no penalty or court order be assessed against the City of Huntsville. $1.7 million appropriation to Huntsville City Schools TIF 3 benefits Columbia High School and Providence K-8 School
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer stated at her State of the City address in November 2006 that education will remain a top priority for her administration. "Finding ways to provide funding needed by the school system is fundamental to positioning Huntsville to be a strong city for the long-term," Spencer stated. Mayor Spencer introduces Ordinance to establish a Department of Public Safety
Huntsville, AL --- Mayor Loretta Spencer will introduce an Ordinance tonight to establish a Department of Public Safety. This will also establish a new position, Director of Public Safety, and will combine operations of the Animal Services, Fire & Rescue and Police Departments. The Director of Animal Services, Fire & Rescue Chief and Police Chief will report directly to the Director of Public Safety. All positions will be appointments by the Mayor. "This is something I have looked at since my first term," Spencer commented. "Establishing this will position our enforcement and emergency response agencies to increase the effectiveness of their coordination." [Full Story]

Emergency Home Repair Program Volunteers Recognized

A Catholic High School student group was one of 14 groups recognized for their work in repairing homes last year.
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer presented awards to church and volunteer groups who participated in the Emergency Home Repair Program administered by the city's Community Development Department. "Volunteering with programs for the benefit of others is one of the most rewarding actions an individual can take," Mayor Spencer commented. "I would like to thank you for taking an active role to help those in the community who needed it. The time and kindness you have given has made a significant difference in the quality of life of those assisted." [Full Story]

Historic Merrimack Hall to be Transformed Into State of the Art Performing Arts Center
Steeped in Huntsville's rich textile industry history, Merrimack Hall was once the center of the social activities for the Merrimack Mill Village. Located at 3324 Triana Boulevard, the 25,000 square foot facility will be transformed into a performing arts center providing educational programs and performance opportunities to both established and emerging performers in the areas of dance, drama and music. City honors three local companies with Air Pollution Control Achievement Awards
Mayor Loretta Spencer and the City of Huntsville's Air Pollution Control Board presented awards to three local companies in recognition of their efforts to reduce air pollutant emissions. BASF Catalysts, LLC (formerly Engelhard Catalyst Technology Group), International Diesel of Alabama, LLC and Siemens VDO Automotive Electronics Corporation were honored in today's awards ceremony. Each company initiated a voluntary program to reduce emissions beyond regulatory requirements. A synopsis of each program is provided in the full story. [Full Story]

City opens Sand Volleyball Courts
Mayor Loretta Spencer and the City of Huntsville's Parks & Recreation, General Services, Public Works and Landscape Management departments cut the ribbon to officially open Huntsville's Sand Volleyball Courts. The city converted the old tennis courts at the former Huntsville Tennis Center into 6 sand volleyball pits.

"I want to commend our city departments who were able to take the old tennis facility and convert it into a new facility that offers residents another recreation activity," Mayor Spencer commented. "We were able to use money that had been allocated for the demolition of the tennis center in a positive way." [Full Story]



Local Effort Aiding Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Evacuees Receives Reimbursement

Scott Jones, administrative pastor of The Rock Family Worship Center, thanks Mayor Spencer and Council Members for their support of Operation Restoration at the August 10, 2006 City Council Meeting.
Huntsville, Ala. --- Mayor Loretta Spencer presented a resolution, passed by the City Council at the May 25, 2006 Council Meeting, to enter into a contract with The Rock for "Operation Restoration" so money spent on this project would be eligible for reimbursement by FEMA and go to further the mission of the "Hotel of Hope". The Rock Family Worship Center received a check for $142,502.95 at the August 10th City Council Meeting. [Full Story]

Governor Bob Riley announces Huntsville's and the State's ratings by Southern Business and Development magazine joining him pictured from left are; Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer, Governor Riley, and BRAC Committee Chairman Joe Ritch.
Southern Business and Development magazine calls Huntsville "the South's newest economic development rock star" in its latest issue. This is the second consecutive year the magazine has selected Huntsville as the "Mid-Market of the Year" and states that "Economic development just doesn't get any better than it is in Huntsville right now."

Highlighting some of the factors earning Huntsville the distinction this year, the article references 4,000 new jobs anticipated with BRAC and the Hudson-Alpha Institute of Biotechnology announcement, with a projected 1,000 new jobs. According to the magazine, "The Hudson-Alpha Institute represents one of the South's largest life sciences announcements". [Full Story]

"Ranking 9th in the nation shows that in Huntsville we are committed to environmental excellence and recognize the importance of protecting our local and global environments and natural resources."
