Huntsville Bicentennial Commission

Huntsville will celebrate its 200th Birthday in 2005. Planning for this grand celebration is in full swing with the enthusiasm and excitement becoming contagious. Plans are underway to ensure all citizens across the city will have representation in all phases of this celebration. Our logo is representative of our early days when the dominant industry was cotton to today's space age, represented by space flight. Huntsville has a rich heritage.

Four committees have been organized to plan the celebration and provide opportunities for people to learn about all facets making Huntsville the truly special city it is today. These committees are: Inheritance, Life, Legacy and Special Projects.

The celebration focus is events happening all over the city throughout the year with the last week of July and the first week in August bringing the celebration to the grand finale on August 6, 2005. The Unity Day Parade ends in Big Spring Park where Mayor Loretta Spencer will light the Unity Candle on a large birthday cake commemorating Huntsville's 200th Birthday. Events are planned throughout downtown with music, activities for our young and "young at heart", the dedication of the Bicentennial Park and the 2055 Time Capsule concluding with a special concert performed by the Huntsville Symphony in conjunction with the Huntsville Community Chorus and a grand finale fireworks display.

Make plans to visit the Bicentennial Calendar regularly so that you do not miss any of the events for our 200th Celebration!
