Nearly 20 years of transparency: City celebrates government access channel's anniversary 19th anniversary marked with more televised meetings than ever, project highlight videos, press conferences |
HUNTSVILLE, AL (April 19, 2010) - April 13, 2010 marked the 19th anniversary of television broadcasts of Huntsville City Council meetings, a major feat in the advancement of transparency in government.
Huntsville 1 (Channel 16, Comcast, Channel 42, Knology), the City of Huntsville's government access channel, began airing city council meetings on April 13, 1991. The channel remained a mainstay of council broadcasts, meeting announcements and city services programming during that time.
More recently, the channel was rebranded to include more quality of life information and more information about City of Huntsville projects, meetings and leadership than at any point in time in its history.
In addition to City Council meetings, Huntsville 1 also televises planning commission meetings, Metropolitan Planning Organization meetings, press conferences by Mayor Tommy Battle and project highlight videos - including information about the renovation and expansion of the Huntsville Museum of Art, downtown courthouse square, North and South Parkway overpasses and more. The Metropolitan Planning Commission is responsible for setting long term transportation goals for the Huntsville Metropolitan area.
"The past twenty years have seen enormous transparency advancements in municipal government. The work we're doing now with Huntsville 1 now isn't the end - it's the beginning. We're continuing to look for more ways to highlight what your local government does and promoting access, information and transparency." said Mayor Tommy Battle.
Huntsville 1now airs the previous council meetings Thursdays at 6:00 pm when there is no council meeting in addition to numerous other meetings and civic events that may be of interest to Huntsvillians.
