MORE ROADS THAN EVER BEFORE: Mayor Battle touts incredible success in road projects
City of Huntsville has paved and resurfaced more roads in the past two years than at any point in its history. |
 HUNTSVILLE, AL (April 6, 2011) - Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, along with Terry Hatfield, the City of Huntsville's Director of Public Works, and numerous employees from that department announced today that over the past two years (since 2009) more roads have been paved and resurfaced in the City of Huntsville than at any point in its history.
Under Mayor Battle's leadership, the City's Department of Public Works has spent nearly $9 million dollars on road resurfacing projects since 2009. 163 roads throughout all areas of the city have been resurfaced during that time.
"We often talk about the role of government and what it should be," said Mayor Tommy Battle. "Our administration has been and continues to be of the belief that government's role should be limited and effective."
Mayor Battle went on to say that the record breaking resurfacing schedule, which occurred in spite of the national economic downturn and recession, was a strong example of an effective government.
"I am proud to say that today; we can give no better example of an effective government than this."
Mayor Battle credited his administration's success in these road projects to several factors.
"This is possible because we've had smart management," added the mayor. "We've been able to break this record with the support of our partners in government - our city council, some federal stimulus money - and most importantly, with the work our department heads and the employees of the Department of Public Works do every day for us. They are the ones who make milestones like this possible."
Mayor Battle closed by thanking the city works directly involved in road resurfacing and the impact they have on our community.
"Our neighborhoods are the lifeblood of our city, and we must invest in them. That is why we are investing in street resurfacing. Projects like these make a positive impact on our city and our quality of life."
