There is no doubt that the decision of the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission will have an impact upon the local and regional transportation network. The decision to relocate over 4,000 military jobs to Redstone Arsenal will have a tremendous influence on additional employment in the area - by creating both direct and indirect jobs. A majority of these employees will relocate to the region with their families. While it is unknown exactly where these individuals will live, it is known that a majority of these jobs will be located either at Redstone Arsenal or in close proximity to the installation. This means that more commuters will be accessing the regional transportation network to travel into Huntsville. Additionally, it is obvious that these relocating families will be using the roads to access employment, education, and quality of life opportunities.
The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa conducted a study during 2007 to analyze the impact of BRAC 2005 upon the regional economy and the transportation network. The study identifies the impact of job creation upon the region and the State, and identifies additional corridors needing improvement during the next 25 years.
