Huntsville Police Prepare for Rocket City Marathon
Huntsville, Alabama
(December 7, 2007) More than 2000 people are expected to participate and
watch the Rocket City Marathon this Saturday, December 8, 2007. Spokesman
Wendell Johnson said it’s the largest event in the city that requires multiple
road closings to allow runners a safe venue to compete. Johnson said motorists
should obey all Police and Public Safety Aides who will direct traffic at
intersections along the route. Because of the length of the route, there will
only be a few posted barricades. The course consists of a downtown loop
approximately two and a half miles circling through portions of the business
district and the two historic districts ending at Lowe Avenue close to the
Holiday Inn Select. The Marathon begins at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to end at
2:00 p.m. Johnson said motorists should avoid traveling along Airport Road and
Governor’s Drive near Huntsville Hospital and use alternate routes like
Weatherly Road, Drake Avenue and Bob Wallace. For more specific information,
citizens can access the Huntsville Track Club Rocket City Marathon route at:
