Huntsville Police Capture Daring Daylight Robbery Suspect
Huntsville, Alabama (January 6, 2007) West Huntsville Police officers captured the man responsible for three daring business robberies in the past 48 hours. According to Investigator Missy Lackey, the Atlanta Bread Company at 6275 University Drive was robbed about 7:30 Saturday morning. The suspect told the cashier he had a gun, demanded money and fled in an older model white Crown Vic. Officer Paul Jones spotted the vehicle minutes later at Old Monrovia Road and University Drive. Officer Jones questioned the man and witnesses at the Atlanta Bread Company identified him as the suspect, 30-year-old Derek Gregory Clay of Huntsville.
During questioning, Investigator Lackey said Clay admitted that he also robbed the Books a Million store Friday about 10:00 a.m., and the Jewelry and Handbag Warehouse on Jordan Lane about 12:30 Thursday afternoon. Employees at these two businesses also identified Clay as the man who robbed them. He was booked into the Madison County Metro Jail on three counts of Armed Robbery 1st degree.
Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said all of the money stolen from the businesses was recovered minus a single dollar. Clay was arrested for Robbery on May 16, 2001. He was sentenced to ten years in Alabama State prison and was released after serving 4 years,
