Huntsville Police Bomb Squad Reveal New Robot and Honors

Huntsville, Alabama (December 20, 2006) Top honors for the second time in a two years, as the Huntsville Police Department’s bomb squad takes 1^st place at the Alabama Robot Rodeo Championship for law enforcement recently. The event was held in Birmingham and HPD won the honors using the Andros F6A, from Remotec.

Sgt. Burnie Stedman, “All seven members of the team operate the remote-controlled Mini-Andros II, however, Officer Robert Bingham was at the controls to take all four races which test skill and speed”.

The new robot is the HD – 1 which was bought with homeland security funds. Huntsville Police is one of a few law enforcement agencies with this latest capability that is now employed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stedham said it is faster and has the latest technology to destroy bombs and be used in hostage situations with SWAT. HPD is the agency federal, state and local law enforcement in the Tennessee Valley call upon for assistance under a mutual aid agreement.
