Chief Rex Reynolds Holds Promotional/Awards Ceremony

                       

Huntsville, Alabama (February 27, 2006) Huntsville Police Chief Rex Reynolds held a ceremony Monday morning to promote 10 Officers, ranging from the position of Investigator up to the rank of Captain. He also announced the annual Supervisors, Officer and Employee of the Year with awards.

Lt. Vince Dauro, a 24-year veteran with the Huntsville Police Department has been promoted to the rank of Captain. He will assume Command of Technical Services, which includes IT, Communications and Fleet.


Sgt. Mark McMurray, formally K-9 supervisor has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  Officer John Newberry has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Additionally, 7 Officers with years of street experience in Uniform Patrol Division have been promoted to the position of Investigator.

Also Sgt. Jon Turis and Sgt. Tommy Presley have been recognized as the Supervisors of the Year. Sgt. Turis, a West Precinct supervisor was nominated for, “thinking outside the box”. He took the initiative for tracking convicted sex offenders, addressed issues in high crime areas and helped to contribute to a tranquil environment for citizens. In conclusion, he has worked tirelessly to improve the strength, needs and skills of the Officers he supervises. 

 Sgt. Tommy Presley is assigned to the Police Academy as the Training Supervisor. His assignment came at the time the Academy was preparing to relocate to a new facility, open a hiring process for a lateral academy, finalize and implement In-Service Training and conduct firearms re-qualification, along with physical abilities testing for 350 sworn Police Officers. He is also involved in the Christian Police Officers organization and initiated the “Shop with a Cop” program, which assisted low-income families during Christmas.

 The Department’s Officer of the Year is awarded to Dewayne McCarver of the West Precinct. Officer McCarver has survived and triumphed over more life-threatening events in one year than many Officers endure their entire career. He received a Purple Heart Medal during an altercation with several suspects. He was involved and cleared in a justified shooting of a suspect threatening his life with a weapon. He also assumed responsibility as a counselor and advisor with other Officers who were traumatized at the shooting death of fellow Officer Daniel Golden.

 Ms. Sondra Johnson, who is assigned to the Training Academy, has been given the Employee of the Year Award. In 2005, during a period of staff re-assignments and promotions at the start of the 46th Lateral Academy, she assisted new personnel during the largest academy class in recent history. All of this during the transition of the Police Academy’s move from the old Airport location to the new Huntsville Public Safety Training Academy on Sparkman Drive.
