Limestone County Shooting By HPD S.W.A.T. Team Within Policy
Huntsville, Alabama (August 2, 2006) Huntsville Police Chief Rex Reynolds concurs with the unanimous findings of a departmental Incident Review Board that the June 27th use of deadly force was “In Policy.” Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said the Board met on Tuesday August 1st to examine evidence and hear testimony surrounding the shooting incident of 50-year-old Kenneth Wayne Jamar. The Huntsville Police S.W.A.T. Team was assisting federal agents serving multiple felony warrants across North Alabama and Limestone County. Before S.W.A.T Team members entered the house, they identified themselves as police officers serving search warrants. Once inside, they discovered another door shut and locked, and again identified themselves as police officers. When they broke down the door, Jamar was standing in the room with a handgun pointed at 4 S.W.A.T. Team members. After Jamar failed several commands to drop the weapon, the officers used deadly force to protect themselves. Jamar was shot several times, treated and released at Huntsville Hospital.
Because the shooting took place in Limestone County, the Sheriff’s department conducted the investigation. The case will now go before the Limestone County District Attorney who will determine if he will present the findings to a grand jury which serves as a citizens review board.
