Sex Offender Captured in Police Chase
Huntsville, Alabama (August 15, 2006) Huntsville Police captured convicted sex offender Roger Edwin Ellis (DOB 11-24-1958) after a brief pursuit that ended in a one-vehicle crash on South Memorial Parkway. Huntsville Police and Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies have been looking for Ellis for the past several months on charges of First Degree Robbery and Violation of the Community Notification Act.
At about 10:15 this morning, after receiving information that he was in the Lowe Mill area, Huntsville Police spotted him in his vehicle. However, when they attempted to pull him over, he fled. He drove east on Governors Drive, then turned south on Memorial Parkway where he crashed at the Golf Road overpass. He is being treated at Huntsville Hospital and he will be booked into the Metro upon his release. Ellis was the only person injured.
Ellis was featured in the media recently because he is a convicted Sex Offender and had failed to notify the Sheriff’s Department as required under Alabama’s Community Notification Act (Alabama’s version of “Megan’s law”) that he had changed residences. He was also wanted by Huntsville Police on a First Degree Robbery charge involving the June 13, 2006 Armed Robbery of Discount Food Mart on South Parkway.
