Does WPC make drinking water?
No. A different City department, Huntsville Utilities, makes our drinking water.
WPC (short for Water Pollution Control) has a different job.
We help to keep pollution out of Huntsville's streams, creeks, rivers, and lakes.
Not all pollution, though.
WPC works to keep wastewater (often called "sewage") from polluting the water.
Wastewater is what all of us send down the bathtub drain, the kitchen sink, and the toilet every day.
If our wastewater went straight into our waterways, they would not be safe to swim in, fish from, or even for Huntsville Utilities to make our drinking water from. There are other types of pollution that get into our waterways.
Things like excess bug sprays and fertilizers that we put on our lawns, or oil that leaks out of our car engines, or trash just dropped onto the ground.Other city, state, and federal departments work to prevent these kinds of pollution.
